Graphite Exhaust Gasket Fitting.
So youve removed the exhaust silencer and found the gasket is worn out like this, or even worse its falling apart... well dont panic its a simple replacement as long as you follow a few simple steps.
Well obviously the first step is to get rid of the old gasket, so using something thin like a screw driver tip, push the gasket through the slots to crush it in...
Once its been crushed a little you can get the screwdriver so similar down the side between the gasket and the exhaust like this, we will use it to lever the gasket slightly...
And with a little leverage the remaining gasket wll come out... sometimes it will be in a few bits where as this one came out nicely in one lump.
Now make sure the inside of the exhaust if free from old gasket, if anything remains it must be removed or the new gasket will be damaged on fitting... scrape it, scratch it, sand it... do what ever you need to get it all removed.
Now we need to open the exhaust back up as the clamp will have nipped the opening slightly.. you need something the same size as the outer diameter of the gasket, ive found a halfords 1-1/8 socket is absolutely perfect for this...
Now use your chosen item to open the exhaust fitting, i hammer the socket into the exhaust which gives a perfect opening all the way down to the stop...
Now you need the new gasket, this is the later spec genuine item and its the best there is for the job, its now stainless steel reinforced and has a mesh section at the top which prevents damage to the graphite when aligning the pipe up... worth the extra over cheaper pattern ones for sure in my opinion...
Now place the gasket into the exhaust, remembering the metal mesh must face outwards...
Now only using the palm of your hand and light pressure push the gasket all the down, it should go just past flush... if it takes a lot of force then take it out and reopen the exhaust as its too tight still.. it must go down fairly easily or youll just damage the gasket and be doing it all again in 500 miles.
So thats it, the gasket is now into place just below flush and covering all the slit down the sides... looking good.
So thats it, refitted the clamp and we are ready to refit to the bike... while its off you could always give the pipe a quick coat of paint to help extend its lifespan.
Wasnt too bad was it.
